Golarion's wounds

Preamble

It’s been 10 years since the last Mendevian crusade into the horrors of the Worldwound.  That was the 4th such crusade, and even though it was the longest and the most brutal, human memories are short, and the horror of that campaign has begun to pale compared to the daily horrors the demon horde of the Worldwound visit on the outlying regions of Mendev.

Crusader Queen Galfrey has tasked her general, the pious Sir Bivros Rolondl, with preparing this 5thcrusade, and striking a balance between the tactics used in the prior crusades.  Sir Bivros has ordered the preparation of dozens of small strike forces.  These strike forces are designed to mimic the one successful tactic from the 2nd crusade, the “infiltration crusade”, and gather reconnaissance about the locations of the demon forces.  Each strike force is to be comprised of a mixture of the pious and the “low templars”, mercenaries, criminals and non-pious, who were granted, or forced into, positions in the army.  Some of these low templars are paid, some are conscripted, some are released from prison directly into the army, all are looked down on by the pious.  The leader of each strike force was granted a powerful magic item that relays all of the geographical reconnaissance back to Sir Bivros’ staff, this happens automatically, but is expected to be accompanied by a separate voice report delivered daily by the leader of the strike force.

The strike forces have been assembled and transported to villages nearest their insertion points.  For our fearless party, that insertion point is the hamlet of Narom on the western border of Mendev.

A beginning and a brawl
31May2017

For Sid, CJ and Gortak the adventure began by being unceremoniously deposited in the middle of the hamlet of Narom.  They were supplied with a rough pack of gear, courtesy of the Queen, and left to wait for their commanding officer.  Valtor made his way to Narom under his own power, meeting the commanding officer, and fellow war veteran Handle.

Handle Riverbottom appears to understand the tenuous nature of his command, but still managed to round up the 4 player characters and bring them to The Drowned Goat to meet the remaining members of The 52nd Strike, a sullen half elf named Strix and a human woman who has not introduced herself.  The party exchanged some brief stores about their background, ate dinner and drank.  After several drinks, dinner was interrupted by 4 large locals who appeared to not dislike the party.  Egged on by Valtor, a brawl followed, which was decisively won by the party.  Post brawl CJ noted Handle slip something into the pocket of one of the local toughs.  A small pouch of coins that CJ quickly liberated from the thug and returned to the party so that they could continue drinking.  After Handle went to bed, the party quickly broke up, although it appears that everyone has decided to stick with the war effort for the time being, with the possible exception of CJ who disappeared shortly after Handle went to bed.

A curtailed plan

The party slowly awoke the next morning, some nursing hangovers, some having not slept at all during the evening.  After Hand woke up, the party met in the courtyard of the inn with Hand doling out pay in advance.  Seemingly unbeknownst to everyone, the coins were enchanted and designed to impress the importance of the crusade into their minds artificially.  The majority of the party was unaffected by this ruse.  While the party went to spend their pay on supplies, Hand returned to his room to talk to his superior officers.  On returning he was angry at having learned of the enchanted coins, and insisted that the party leave before their planned departure date.

(also, there was a thunderstorm and tornado warning IRL so Casey had to go hang out in the basement)

A demon and some goblins

While Hand made the final preparations to leave CJ and Sid noticed a commotion coming from outside the village wall.  It turned out that part of a goblin tribe was outside the wall, and looking to come in.  Through some intimidation (or greeting) from Gortak and some quick talking from Valtor and CJ what seemed sure to be a battle for the village turned into the goblins leading our heroes back towards their camp, where the remainder of their tribe and a demon of some kind waited.  The demon had sent the goblins over the wardstones barrier to attack the village.  Just on the human side of the wardstones barrier the party encountered the remains of the goblin tribe, gathered around an evil quasit.  The party, with help from the goblins who led them there, surrounded and attacked and killed the evil goblins and the quasit.  They were now quite close to the wardstones barrier though, and potentially more, larger demons.

A plan emerges

After killing the bad goblins and the quasit the party had a brief discussion with the few remaining good goblins.  They expressed a desire to find the "pool" because the pool would make them better, stronger, and faster.  Hand expressed that this pool could be interesting intel and so off the party went, continuing up the hill, which was gradually becoming a mountain.  At some point they crossed over wall created by the wardstones, and while nothing overly changed, the threat level for the party definitely increased.  As they stopped for the night they were attacked by a swarm of demonic creatures, in this case, rats as large as dogs.  The party quickly overwhelmed the swarm of creatures, no thanks to the goblins who had disappeared up the mountain.  They reappeared after the fight and claimed they were trying to keep the party from being surrounded.

The following day was a continuation of hiking up the mountain.  CJ was able to actually get the silent bard to speak, and learned that her name is Brande.  The creepy half-elf attempted some conversation with Gortak, but was quickly rebuffed.  Val did not tell anyone of this dream the night before in which he was approached by a devilish bureaucrat who informed him that he was being observed before cryptically reminding him of the blood war.

As the day progressed, the party loosened up a bit, to the point where Valtor bet CJ that he would not respond to a nearby wolf howl.  CJ did and was rewarded by a giant demonic wolf moving out of the brush in front of the party.
