Wardstones are powerful minor artifacts that dot the periphery of the Worldwound. These artifacts prevent inherently evil creatures from crossing the invisible barrier they create. However, each wardstone requires maintenance and blessings from good priests to continue functioning. Each wardstone must be renewed by a specific ritual twice a year, if it is not then it becomes weakened and is subject to damage. The resulting hole in the warding barrier can range in size from a few feet to miles. There are hundreds of wardstones of varying power along the Worldwound periphery and when they are maintained properly would maintain a perfect barrier against the enclosed demons. They are never properly maintained however, due to weather, bandits or demonic influence wardstones are often not maintained, so it is not uncommon to find raiding parties of demons outside the barrier. The largest wardstones are almost always maintained though, and only once in recent memory has one been damaged. The resulting breach allowed hundreds of demons to issue forth and was only repaired by the 4th Mendevian crusade.
